What are they teaching my nephew?!

August 30th, 2009 VanGuard No comments

I was talking to my 11-year-old nephew the other day about what he wanted to be when he grew up. He told me he wanted to join the military. I am a curious person and I ask why a lot. So, I asked him why he wished to join the military. He told me he wanted to go to Iraq. Again I asked why. What he said next not only surprised me but gave me a fright. He said, “I want to kill Iraqis”.

I was set back by what he said and promptly asked him why would he want to do that. Again, what he said scared me. “They are different then us”. I kept thinking to myself what the hell is my sister and her boyfriend teaching him. I told him that first the military is to defend our nation and our citizen. Not to attack or kill unprovoked. He repeated “but they are different then us”. I sighed and told him that just because someone is different or a nation is different that it does not mean we have the right or the authority to attack/kill. I then stated that to everyone else we are different.

I then told him that there are some nations in this world that there are children soldiers. That these kids fight and kill to defend their family, their homes and their very own lives. He only said “Cooooooool”. I just sighed and dropped it knowing he won’t understand. During this whole conversation he kept repeating old false propaganda. The whole they started they war, Al Qaeda, weapons of mass destruction. Each time I refuted what he said he just shrugged.

My nephew identifies himself as a Christian the same as his mother and her boyfriend. Indoctrination has this boy’s head full of its ok to kill others because they are different or because there is a moral right to it. I have no clue what they are teaching my nephew but I really hope that when he get’s older that he will let logic, reason, rationality weigh more then some false promises by religious brainwashing.

Illusion of Free Will

April 27th, 2009 VanGuard No comments

Over the past months I have been pondering over the concept of free will. Not mealy on the religious terms but in life itself. I don’t think I have fully grasped the concept of what I am going to try to articulate but bare with me.

Merriam-Webster describes free will as the following.

1 : voluntary choice or decision
2 : freedom of humans to make choices that are not determined by prior causes or by divine intervention

I call free will the Illusion of free will for two simple concept reasons.

The first part “illusion” is made of “the past can predict the future”. This means that your past actions can if known predict what you may do. Simple enough example would be the following.

My mother knows me very well I think and if there were three items in the fridge. Let’s say 1 bottle of beer, 1 bottle of water and 1 glass of milk. Which would she say I would take? My mother would with most certain say I would take the milk.

Free will would depict that one can change their mind. So even though I would choose the milk. Free will would allow me to change my mind or move out of my normal role and say take the beer.

So the first part can predict our future but since we can change our minds. Which changes our future which has not happened yet then free will could exist in that adaptation.

So this Illusion of Free Will states to me that even though my past can predict my future. It won’t always be able to tell what I would always do because the future has not happened.

Now if you move onto some of the religious documents on free will. Then you may, I think have a problem.  If we take the judeo-christian god who is suppose to be omniscient.  Then what we have here is that there is a god who knows every variable in our path.  Who knows what road we will take or better yet  knows all roads that are available and what is down each road.  To me this comes as a problem for then it is not technically free will.

Another concept of religion is that god has a master plan and guides us to that plan. This by definition defeats free will. If a path is already chosen by someone or something else. Then it is not free will. You may go along with this plan freely but to me that does not make it free will to have something decided for you that you simply go along with.

So we have the illusion because we can predict our actions from our past but can change our minds since the future has not happened.

What are your opinions my friends?

A breakfast of delusion

March 29th, 2009 VanGuard No comments

Yesterday evening my mothers preacher called me and invited me to a breakfast that my mothers church was having for friendship day. Now if you do not know me well or just don’t care to. I am an atheist. I do not believe in superstition, zeus, thor, shiva, leprechauns, fairies, any other god or other magical fairy tells. I believe a church is just a building same as a post office is just another building. My mother wishes I would go to her church and I bet the church does as well to fill their kofers.

I am for one do not turn down free food. Before we went to her church we stopped at Wal-Mart to get some Orajel for my wisdom teeth and pick up some doughnuts. We also ran into my sisters boyfriends parents in the parking lot, so we talked to them. We headed to the church and when we were pulling into the parking lot, The Fight Song by Marilyn Manson came on over my ipod. I thought it was befitting the occasion. The breakfast was uneventful. No, I did not lower my head when they prayed over their food and that was the only mention of imaginary friends as well.

I have been to her church a few times but I got tired of hearing the bullshit lies and delusional stories so I stopped going. They are good people I think. Somewhat misguided, deluded and delusional. Who isn’t right? The entire trip was very uneventful. I did talk to two people about Guild Wars. They use to play but not anymore. Guild Wars does get boring, especially with no content updates.  Though the update in April is suppose to pack some of this stuff.  Hopefully I will not be disappointed.

That was my morning.  What did you to this morning?
